Addiction, Recovery, and Yoga

The following facts come from the article, “Online only: Report finds most U.S. inmates suffer from substance abuse or addiction” which references a report from 2009.

• 65% of incarcerated people (1.5 million) meet DSM-IV criteria for substance abuse

• 20% of those incarcerated have histories of drug or alcohol abuse

• Only 11% of prisoners receive substance abuse treatment during their incarceration.

• Alcohol and other drugs have had a significant influence in all crimes, including 78 percent of violent crimes, 83 percent of property crimes and 77 percent of public order, immigration or weapons offenses, as well as probation and parole violations.

Nikki Myers is joining us April 7 to share her lived experience of addiction, recovery, and the yogic path. She created a nurturing and sustainable recovery system through yoga and a 12-step program called Y12SR. Y12SR “connects the dots” between the ancient wisdom of yoga, the practical tools of 12-step programs, and the latest research on trauma healing and neurobiology. As part of a holistic recovery program, it works in tandem with traditional treatment to address the physical, mental and spiritual disease of addiction.
