Hello! My name is Bill Brown, and I am the current Executive Director of the Prison Yoga Project. I am here as one of your training facilitators. I have been working in prisons and jails bringing yoga and embodied mindfulness to incarcerated people since 2013, and I’m a contributing editor to the Yoga Service Council book “Best Practices for Yoga in the Criminal Justice System.” My yoga therapy training was with Pheonix Rising Yoga Therapy and I am a C-IAYT (Certified – International Association of Yoga Therapy).

What am I excited about learning? Well, we’ve built-in time for self-reflection and for research on your local scene so I am hoping to learn from you all more about the texture of the criminal justice system throughout the country. I also know that we have people with considerable knowledge and expertise, so I know there will be rich and rewarding discussions.

In my free time, I enjoy photography, cooking, and being out in nature.

Welcome, Denise! I am always impressed when people can trace their calling to this type of work at such a young age. Veterans are, as you might expect, overrepresented in prison and jails, and there are unique opportunities to work that intersection of society. It’s likely we will create a Yoga for Incarcerated Veterans special interest group in the Community site soon.

Hi Molly! This is what we’ve been hoping for when we created this site, bringing all the passionate, like-minded people – like you – together to share and learn from each other. So glad you’re here!

Hi Susan! So glad to have you with us. You’re background and experience are quite rich. Looking forward to the perspective you bring with respect to working with Indigenous People.

Hi Eleonora! I’ve always been interested in acting and improv as a trauma-informed practice. Looking forward to hearing more.

RE: Book - Best Practices for Yoga int he CJS

Hello! That excerpt from the book should have been linked as a PDF. Somehow that must have been broken when we made some updates recently. I have it fixed now.
