Hi, I’m Susie Weigel, and I’m the Alabama Program Director for the Prison Yoga Project. I’ve lived in Alabama my entire life (well, I lived in Germany once for 6 months, but that’s a blink by comparison, really). I’m originally from Huntsville, Alabama, but I’ve lived in Auburn since 1994. I taught high school English and college German before shifting my focus entirely to yoga/prison yoga last year. I had the pleasure of attending a PYP training led by James in 2019 at the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham. That training solidified the “pull” I was already feeling to shift my focus to the work I’m doing now.

Pre-COVID-19, I taught yoga classes for the general population and for staff at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. I currently teach Zoom yoga classes at Lee County Youth Development Center.

In my free time, I enjoy cooking and taking long walks outdoors. While I’ve had the pleasure of traveling pretty extensively, the beaches of Northwest Florida along the Gulf of Mexico is/are my favorite place on the planet!
